No matter who you carve out from the other 3 spots, only one guy in history should be a unanimous pick: Ali

Mt. Rushmore only has 4 Presidents. If it had 5 then 66 would be there. I think you would agree that Howe, Gretzky and Orr are not up for debate. Sawchuk, Plante or Dryden are in a photo finish. I would equite Sawchuk and Plante to Howe -- old school! I would compare Dryden to Lemieux -- new school.

Like I said, I only had 4 spots and mean no disrespect to Lemieux.

In most sports 2 or 3 spots are pretty easy. Picking the 4th is a bit tricky. Here are some my easy picks
Baseball Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson are the easy ones
Football Lombardi and Brown are in. If you toss in college then Bear Bryant is in You probably should divide the coaches and the players in football
Track Thrope and Owens are the easy ones
Basketball Jordon, Chamberlain and Russell are in.
Golf Here the 4 are pretty well set Jack,Tiger,Arnie and Bobby Jones
Boxing Joe Lewis and Ali are the easy ones.
Horse Racing Secretariat stand by himself.
If go for all sports and just athletes at once, it is Ruth, Brown, Jordon and Tiger with Ali a close fifth.

Ali transcended sports across the globe, something that's tough to say about any other American sports figure. Woods and Nicklaus are like that to an extent, I think Jack is on the Scottish $5 bill, for example.

Maybe a few tennis players should be considered; Chris Evert and Helen Moody were both ranked #1 for several years in a row; Don Budge, Paco Gonzalez and Pete Sampras on the men's side.
