Wrong Horse Runs at PID

Thought I'd post this... how often does this happen?
(Snip-it from Go Erie)

Doug Salvatore: Horse ran under wrong name at Presque Isle Downs

Presque Isle Downs & Casino bettors were subjected to a dazzling display of ineptitude before the third race July 13 involving both the track horse identifier, John Perez, and the operation of leading trainer Jamie Ness.

The race was an event restricted for 2-year-old Pennsylvania-bred maidens with a $39,000 purse -- and it drew just four betting interests. Only a single horse in the field had ever raced before.

I was in attendance that day and recall more than a few fans approaching me with wisecracks about how uninteresting a betting race it was.

One of the horses entered was an unraced 2-year-old Pennsylvania-bred named Rome Is Freezing. He had only three lifetime published workouts, and only a single workout in almost four weeks. However, Rome Is Freezing's debut would have to wait. He was left behind at Delaware Park.

Instead, fellow Ness-trained 2-year-old Rapid Rampage was shipped in to compete under the name Rome Is Freezing in a race he wasn't eligible to enter because he is a Kentucky-bred.

"It was an honest mistake," Ness, 36, said Thursday. "Both horses look a lot like each other. They're both kind of slow in the morning, too."

Now the charts still reflect that Rome is Freezing ran at PID even though he did not. I'd be PO'd if I bet this race. So if they do not change things Rapid Rampage would still be listed as un-raced.

Identifier should be fired and Ness at least a 60 day suspension

Honest mistake? Just what does he know about honesty? Has his win percentage fallen into the thirtysome percentile?

Well I contacted Equibase they are in the process of correcting the chart.

I agree the Identifier should get sacked and Ness should get time off.

Really surprising that someone with the integrity of Jamie Ness would do something like this.

(Half seriously) Track identifier probably beat a hasty path to the betting windows, thinking he was in on some coup.

Glad the horse ran fourth.

A copy of the ruling was faxed to the proper authorities...now just waiting for someone to hit the right buttons.
Ness received a $1,000 fine and no time off. Don't know about the ID man, yet.

It was clearly an honest mistake. If Ness were actually trying to run a ringer he would never have cross entered the pair. Not making excuses for anything else, but in this case there obviously was no conspiracy. No suspension warranted. As for the identifier, the end result will be nowhere near as rosy.
