Peculiar Ellis Park race

1st race at Ellis 9/1 - Starter Allowance, 2 1/4 miles- 5 horses

Finish:

Sir Dorset - 1st by 43 1/4 lengths
Forty Carats Jade - 2nd by 31
Willard K - 3rd by 55 3/4

5th horse was a dnf. I thought the quarter lengths were kinda comical, but I guess they have to get those speed figures correct!

I think the most hilarious part of this was the 43 1/4 lengths. This has to be some chart caller... not 43 1/2 lengths, mind you but 43 1/4.

ok kids, you ready? thinking caps on?

you never know when forty carats jade is going to meet another horse that lost his last 2 1/4 mile race to the same winner in the same time by 43 1/2 lenghts. so that 1/4 in my almost most humble opinion, make all the difference in the world. sometimes i wonder about you guys

The funniest part of the race was the announcer...he actually said "moving like a tremendous machine" ala Secretariat's Belmont!

I called HDW's Ron Tiller about this race. He went to RaceReplays.com and watched the race. Said that it looked about right to him.

(Although he said the announcer might have missed the 43 1/4 lengths. Ron said it did not look like more than 43 to him. <G>)

I'd like to see the speed figure for the winner of that race. I'm sure Dave has a very reliable par for that distance

Very reliable par... yes. And I built it from the giant database I have of 2 1/4 mile races at ELP.

LOL

Sounds like a normal-gapped race at winter Turfway.

i predict that in the very near future you'll be seeing some of the more important races being carded at 2 1/4 miles, maybe even throwing one into the breeders cup. iam tell'n ya folks, i smell a classic here.
oh, how did they divide the splits. lemme guess, oh,oh wait, i got a great idea. how about we have a contest to see who could come closest to guessing what the splits were in that race. winnner gets a free plane ticket to his or hers choice of either next years toga party or travers day parade
1/2... 52:3
3/4... 14
mile... 1:45
1 1/4... 21
1 1/2... 2:37:3
1 3/4... 3:03:4
2 m..... 3:30
2 1/4... 3:56:1

thats how i would see it, now gimme that plane ticket

...the reason for the 1/4 is because the 'over-under' was 43!

Semi-Cerius question: Don't the beathen lengths get recorded by the camera at the finish?

The Beaten lengths at the splits are estimated ??

So the 43 1/4 means they kept the camera running for a long time.

Good point. I wonder if they actually do that all of the time when they are that far back?

They keep the camera running to cover the whole field. This was the winner...

The only thing I, like better than 2 1/4 mile races are turf sprints at 5f. JimL
