Horse racing on the beach......
Today, if you have the UK/Irish racing video feed on your ADW, you have to watch a race, or two, from Laytown in Ireland.
They run the races there on the beach!
First race just ran at noon ET, and there are 5 more to be run.
Race meets are infrequent at Laytown - scheduled according to tides.
Anyone ever heard of racing on the beach anywhere else?

There's a trotting meet somewhere in northern Germany where they race on the beach.
Btw, Layton is the only "Official" race meet on the beach in Ireland, i.e run under Turf Club rules of racing. But there are plenty of unofficial Flapping meets on beaches, esp in the west of Ireland, with bookies and plenty of gambling going on. Here's a couple
Glenbeigh in Kerry... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKZ0yfizt7Y
Geesala in Mayo... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KN_YiMb77_Y
Lots of top Irish jockeys would have cut their teeth at Flapping meets as teenagers.

Yes.
I did hear of "flapper" meets when I lived in Ireland.
Never made it to one, or to Laytown.

That is quite entertaining. After the wire they trot around in the seaweed.
$500k matched at BF on that race. Half way through the running the winner was 22-1. I did not think he'd win either.
Looked like ten horses, 8 totally open and two with small shadow rolls in a 7f beach race. Interesting.

Gotcha.....
Maybe we shouldn't have tinkered with natural racing surfaces at all?
I'm not advocating racing on sandy beaches, but you can't beat turf, imo.
