Still bored on day off. While waiting for the Melbourne Cup, I decided to look at the last 6 months of second time starters (2TS).

As usual all info in this thread is based upon the last 180 days (through 11/2/2008) of North American thoroughbred racing.

There were 11542 first time starters from which 1334 won at a 12% hit rate.

Juvenile first-time starters in this time window totalled 5179. There were 694
2yo FTS winners at a 13% hit rate.

The three year old and up population produced 640 winners from 6363 first time starters at a 10% hit rate.

BRIS has stats on the last 7 years....many trainers have positive stats with 2TS.

Here is an interesting 2TS stat:

In the last 6 months, there were 963 second time starters that won their debut races. 155 of them (16%) won their second start as well.

In the last 6 months, there were 10579 second time starters who did not win their debut race. 1179 of them (11%) won their second start.

Strangely, in the last 6 months, there were 10 second time starters that won their debut races and were disqualified. 3 of them (10%) won their second start (and thus their maiden) as well.

This should read 2nd time starters and not first time starts. Poor cut and past skills.
