Are Handicapping Contests paramutual ?

As an Az player who would face a class 6 felony if found to be making a $2.00 win bet on a horse at an online book WHAT IF.The player was playing an on line contest. For instance SHOWVIVER,This is not paramutual.Diamond sports offers contests every day.If I enter one or several of these which offer a winner take all prize am I subject to breaking the law as written by the Az legislature? In other words am I betting out of state and online on a paramutual race for w/p/s.Ex, Tri, etc.I dont see it that way.Or am I betting at an online casino in a contest, much the same as Poker,Blackjack,Craps?I would be interested in any feedback from fellow horseplayers on this one.

To me, if you're competing in a handicapping contest where the winner (even of a winner-take-all prize) is determined by who has the biggest ending bankroll, it's pari-mutuel. If the winner is based on who picks the most winners or cashes the most tickets without regard to bankroll size, it's not. (That's just one layman's opinion, though.)

Last Man Standing. Don't Worry.

Showvivor is the last man standing of those entrants who pick one horse each day through the SA meet and it must finish in the top 3. If it doesn't you're out.
I wouldn't worry myself until I was the last man standing.
And even then I wouldn't worry. By the way, I'm already knocked out of it.

Effectively, you are not wagering a nickel over the net. You are simply answering skill testing questions.

If you are walking around and breathing, you are probably violating at least 2 different statutes in half a dozen states, so why worry about it?

If you're playing in a handicapping contest where points are garnered on a WPS basis, then technically it is a pari-mutuel contest.

And yes, contests can be rigged. A few years back at Northfield Park, a small group of bettors would bet a few grand on a no-shot nag from the 8 hole to show. Then the group would bet the play money in the contest on one of the other horses realizing that the show price would be super inflated. Needless to say, they won the contest and made a nice profit, but it sure did bring up some bigtime ethics questions.

Im pretty sure the format of the contest has nothing to do with PARI-MUTUEL.

Pari Mutuel betting is where all of the bets are comingled into a pool and then redistributed to the pool winners. So every contest you put money into could be considered pari-mutuel.

If the contest is free to enter then you should have nothing to worry about.

If you're worried about the AZ laws and the site you're posting about is not a
PARI MUTUEL site (like YOUBET or BETPAD) or OFF SHORE BOOK, then I really wouldnt worry about it.
