Overnight

Hey guys, excuse the beginner-type question, but what the heck is an overnight handicap or an overnight race? I've read the term a few times in some books on handicapping but none go on to explain what the term refers to. Any help would be great, it's really bugging me and I can't find it anywhere on the internet.
Thanks!

From Turfpedia.com (good site!):

"OVERNIGHT RACE
A race for which the entries are taken within 72 hours of post time."
