My picks 2-8 failed to win the Derby. But: I bet it just like
any other race I had on MY RACING CARD(love simulcasting) I had a win at Aqu, a win at Haw, a win at BM and the last at CD. Great day even though I didn't
win the Derby. A few friends went overboard on the Derby and hadf bad days. For me the Derby a great spectacle to watch, but just another race on the bet card.

Talking CD Varinats for Deby Day

With only two route races on the card. it is hard to make a good variant, but here is what I got:

Derby Fast 12 / Fast 22 / Fast 12

Alw Clf Slow 5 / Fast 4 / Fast 4

If you just use these deviations for a varinat, you get
F4 / F13 / F8

This gives the Derby a pace/speed rating of
132-133-119 and a shape of FFF

For the Allowanve race, you get
104-105-106 against a par of 110 so it's SSS

did the Derby go extra fast ealry, or did they "slow up the track" after it was run?
Anyone else making numbers, I'd love to hear your take on this.
Who ever said making numbers wasn't frustrating?

Tom,

These are the numbers (variants) that I got for 5/5/01 at CD. Assuming a hypothetical one mile race, I have the first 1/4m at 3.2 pts fast, the second 1/4 at 2.0 pts fast, the third 1/4m at 6.0 pts fast, and the final quater mile at 16.5 pts fast. (Using my ratings, one length at a 1/4m is worth approx. 8 points.) Since in a 1 1/4m race, they run the last quarter mile twice (albeit this is true only for a one mile track, not necessarily CD), therefore my variant for the Derby is: 16.5+3.2+2.0+6.0+16.5=+44.2, which equates to 44.2/8=5.5 lengths fast (or approximatly one second fast). I agree that making variants is a difficult and inexact "science," but its better than nothing.

Tom:

I came up with fast 14 for the derby and and fast 5 for the Allowance race #10. My sprints averaged fast 9 but the last sprint race (race #9) tailed off to f4. Exluding the turf I had the 9th and 10 the slowest races of the day compared to par.

Im anxious to see what tommorow brings and I suspect the ground crew will do what it can to slow things down.
