Cool

the best thing is to get a firewall. Zone alarm has a free download. If you are not using a firewall you should start now!!!!

FYI, the google pop up piece comes with spyware attached.

PS. Tom, if you stay off the porn sites your pop up problem will probably go away.

I use the FireFox browser, which is free, and has a built in pop up blocker that works very nicely.

Also, XP service pack 2 includes an upgrade to IE that also has a built in pop up explorer, but since I rarely use IE, I can't really say if it is any good or not.

where did you get this from? Fill me in will you? If you install it with "the advanced features enabled" it will report back to google some anonymous stuff. But you just have to install it and check off the "advanced features" the price is damn sure right.

BTW, many pop up ad types are now programming their stuff to avoid the google pop up blocker.......but not many.....yet........

no, a router is not a firewall. A router seperates your computer from the outside so there is not direct connection between you and the isp. The router is what is connected. That way someone can touch the router but not touch your computer.

A firewall blocks unauthorized material from going onto or getting out of your computer. A router does not.

wait a minute Hurrikane. Every router sold for home use and for that mattter most commercial products contain a built in NAT Firewall. You can turn the firewall off if you want. But all of them ship with the firewall enabled. two or three years ago you had to go in and activate the firewall on the router. Not anymore. The manufactures realized that many people were just taking them home and plugging them in and they weren't turning on the firewall. But nowadays if you have a Linksys/DLink/Netgear router you have a firewall.

Here is an example of a generic linksys router description from this link:

http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=405&scid=29

The EtherFast® Cable/DSL Wireless-Ready Router with 4-Port Switch provides the ideal solution for connecting your network to a high-speed broadband Internet connection and a 10/100 Fast Ethernet backbone, with the option to add wireless capabilities. Configurable as a DHCP server for your existing network, the Router acts as the only externally recognized Internet gateway on your local area network (LAN) and serves as an Internet NAT firewall against unwanted outside intruders. Plus, the Router functions as an Access Point when you add a Wireless Network PC card (not included) to enable wireless connectivity.

Here is another popular brand....see the link and right at the top under "product features" notice the firewall feature
http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=64

Here is the netgear version:
http://www.netgear.com/products/details/DG834.php

Note in the description that it contains the netgear firewall.

Just Ralph.....

A few days ago I installed the d-link router.

Do I need to do any further configuration? (Win98, DSL)

Is it supposed to notify me of attempted intrusions?

I was using ZoneAlarm but it's a bit of a resource hog, so I disabled it after installing the router. Do you think I need both or will just the router suffice?

AdAware has been having a tough time finding any spyware since router install.

By the way, I might mention to all that AdAware has a new release version, "Build 1.05"

Thanks Ralph, for your ongoing assistance.

Tom,

I'm no expert, but this works fine for me. Only problem is when I try to navigate brisbet, I have to turn the pop up stopper off. Fyi, I have the free edition & never have a problem w/ pop ups.

I downloaded and installed service pack 2 for XP, and it included the latest windows explorer with built in popup killer.

Unlike almost everyone else, I have not encountered a single problem since the upgrade. The popup stopper works great too.

Ralph,
you are absolutely right. they ship with a firewall. But the router itself is not a firewall.
I have the Barricade SMC router and it uses Zone Alarm for the firewall. It doesn't confifure automatically.

Before that I used Dlink and still had to go to anouther firewall product because things were creeping thought the cracks.

Or maybe not. Maybe Tom needs to upgrade his firewall

You could also use the Mozzilla Firefox browser and solve a lot of your problems
