Belmont: Sunday, July 2

Race One:

In the opener, a 20k claiming route, I’m giving my tepid nod to JUST GOT OUT. This Unbridled-bred mare did not run her race in a recent sprint on the sloppy Belmont surface. This 6 year-old wants to go longer; she’s more the plodding type. This mile and a teenth is more to her liking. She would move up with any residual moisture on the Belmont oval. The Jamaican-born, Rajiv Maragh is in the irons for trainer Carlos Martin. Martin does well with horses going from sprint-to-route. Others: , ,

Race Two:

COMPLICIT has been away from the races, as Billy Joel might say: “For the longest time”. Yet, this Giant’s Causeway-bred has a lot going for her, including her turf pedigree. You can add to that the riding skills of Irad Ortiz, Jr. and the training acumen of “Mechanicsville Chad” Brown. In her only race, back in early December at Aqueduct, this bay filly was a closing 3rd in a relatively
similar MSW event. Any improvement off her last effort could very well land this filly in the winner’s circle. Others: , ,

Race Three:

LITTLE MISS JULIA may be “a reach” in the 7-panels claiming event. This bay mare’s trainer, Linda Fisher, albeit with a limited number of horses in her barn, has not saddled a winner, nor, for that matter, has seen any of her charges hit the board. The mare’s apprentice jockey, Luis Reyes (he’s still learning his craft) has won only three races in 90 tries. Frankly, I realize that the above is not too reassuring. Yet… I can’t overlook the with the fact that this mare is dropping down into a race that, under the best of circumstances, she can win. Yes, win. This company is more to her liking. She’s done well at this level in the past. Any residual moisture would likely aid and abet her cause. If you’re looking elsewhere: , ,

Race Four:

PULLING G’S is my upset pick in this 80k OC turf sprint. Before you say: “Tu sei pazzo,” let my lay out my case. May it please the racing public: Although this Mark Casse trainee is making only her second start on the lawn, she does have a degree of turf pedigree, certainly sufficient enough to be competitive on the grass. This gelding has faced much better in the past. Further, this lightly-raced Curlin-bred will most definitely benefit from his outside starting post. His running style, in past races, indicates that. I believe with the right trip, under the most capable guidance of jockey Jose Lezcano, this gelding can prevail. Others: , ,

Race Five:

NO WORRIES MATES is an AE, who I believe, if he draws in, can be a player in this turf MSW sprint. Frankly, there’s a lot to like about this colt. I do declare that I’m partial to “Down Under” turf breeding (the bottom side isn’t too bad, either). You can add to the equation the riding skills of the Hall of Famer, Johnny V. and the training ability of the razor-sharp Jeremiah Englehart. Yet, I must state that Englehart does not have a stellar record when it comes to turf starts. However, having said all that, I believe that if this colt draws in, he’s got a shot. I’ll give you some others numbers that I believe are worthy of consideration: , , ,

Race Six:

BUSTIN IT gets my nod in this state-bred OC sprint. Although there may be a bit of a class question, I find it hard to argue with this 5 year-old chestnut horse’s consistency; he’s won three straight and five of his last six. The horse’s trainer, Bob Falcone, Jr. does well with horses entered first after a claim. Frankly, I wouldn’t expect much rin eturn from the mutuel windows, yet I believe he’s a major contender here. If you’re lookin’ elsewhere, you might consider: , ,

Race Seven:

Before you say, “abuelo loco,” I freely admit that this is an off-the-wall, out-in-leftfield selection. It’s “a gambler’s throw”. Yes, I shudder to mention it (but wouldn’t you have that Chessie Cat grin on your face if it popped); it’s the number , INVENTOR’S GATE. Before you ask, “Teach, whada ya bin smokin’?” Allow me to lay out my brief: This Eddington-bred chestnut gelding won out his lifetime conditions in a similar race at Aqueduct in mid-November of last year. In the past, this Unbridled-bred has faced much better. I don’t know much about the horse’s trainer, Kenneth Streicher, save for the fact that he once trained a come-from-behind horse named C.L. Rib. Finally, “The Louisiana Kid” from Zydeco Country, Kendrick Carmouche, is in the irons. If you’re lookin’ for more conventional possibilities: , , ,

Race Eight:

In this OC marathon turf route, I’m pickin’ GAUGUIN (I’m a sucker for post-impressionist artists: “Bali Hai is calling!”). Yes, this German-bred chestnut colt is making his U.S. debut. His trainer, Bill Mott, does particularly well with these “Across The Pond” shippers to Les Etats-Unis. This Miswaki-bred was second in his last at Saint Cloud (Fr.) at this very same distance. The hot as a petardo (firecracker) on The Fourth of July, Joel Rosario, is in the irons. Others: , ,

Race Nine:

It’s the feature race, the mile and one-sixteenth state-bred non-graded Saginaw. My choice is GOVERNOR MALIBU. Over this past year, this Malibu Moon chestnut colt has run against some of the best horses on the NYRA circuit. His last race was the Grade II Brooklyn; a race in which he finished fourth. This Christophe Clement trainee appears to hold a class edge over most of these. The aforementioned – four winners on yesterday’s card – “El Dominicano,” Joel Rosario, is in the irons. Others: , ,

Race Ten:

In the finale, a MC at seven panels on the lawn, my pick is COOKIE CRISP (if this AE draws in). Although this Candy Ride-bred gelding is winless in two tries on the lawn, he now cuts back in distance and gets class relief. This puts him into a position where, if he draws in, he’s capable of winning. The most competent jockey, the Panamanian-born, Luis Saez, is in the irons for an equally capable trainer, Mike Maker. Maker does very well with horses entered in route-to-sprint races and maiden- claimers. Others: , ,
