I actually do live in the area where the original incident happened. Whenever I drive to the city I pass a lone tree where a sort of memorial is set up. It's sad every time I pass it.
But what would you do with "mentally ill" people..............just lock them away forever? This is an especially bad thing but the laws surrounding "mental incapacity" are either in play or not. I don't have the answer to how this sort of thing should be handled once a person is treated for their illness.

I was mentally ill when I placed my wagers.. Can I have them back? I promise that will reform me.
That makes about as much sense as the above.
I know...small task.

That's a broad brush statement...
In any Capital case as this! Mr. Li have a seat we're going to give you a thrilling shock that will last the rest of your life. I say with in 3 years it's Oops I done it again... crazy huh. Maybe not on a bus or in plain view. But hey till then the Doc's get to write one hell of an article for PsychoActive Monthly.

There should be a difference between mentally ill and someone who murdered someone.
In the later, why ever take the chance?
THe US found an answer to it's growing number of mentally ill people - we let out and made them homeless people.

This guy should never go unsupervised. You are counting on him to take his meds etc. after what he did, no way he gets out on his own. In fact, there would be very few people I trust to escort him.

I agree. One day the medical profession will be able to cure the mentally ill, but we are not there yet and I don't think it will happen in my lifetime or my grandchildren's lifetime. Until then common sense says to keep them locked up. However, I think it should be in a non-punitive setting.

That's something you can thank the Reagan administration for.

Don't forget the ACLU and other legal types who went to court in several states to all but put an end to State funded programs that were the backbone of what they called "the captive mental health system".
Lots of these cases relied on the theory that states would switch the funding to private hospitals etc. many told them that would not happen. I specifically remember one lawyer telling me that it would be equal to the state giving the DMV money away by giving it to local private DMV shops.
That money went other places and the mental health activist got what they wanted. More freedom for their clients. Reagan refused to pickup the funding hole that was left behind. You can blame him all you want. Conservative principles were what he lived by. One of those is the Feds not picking up the slack when states drop the ball. He was right.
Mental health treatment is not a Federal issue. If you want to blame someone, blame your state legislature

If they had been released to the streets back then, NYC would have missed it's last two mayors.

If Vince Li is no longer a threat I say he should be deported back to China,
we dont want him here.Or maybe he can reinegrate into society at the homes
of the doctors who deem him to be no threat, yeah like that'll happen
One more thing about this case,Li was on this bus for hours with only a knife
cannableizing poor Tim Mclean. And what did the RCMP do for hours, nothing.
IMO he should never have gotten off that bus alive.

He would fit right in with China today, after a knife attack that killed 29 yesterday. A professional decapitator should come in handy, until they start passing knife-control laws.

That was terrorism. In a country without a 2nd amendment, somehow people figure out how to kill each other
