Belmont R3
breaks through the stalls slightly early and is declared a DQ. Not a non-starter, a DQ!
This is a new one on me.
Are there any actual rules?

JAKE ROCKS broke through the gate beating the gate at the start and veered in forcing MR. BRIGGS to be taken hold of and bumping COPA solidly into SUPPLY AND DEMAND and in turn commencing a chain of bumps through to ONE WHIRLWIND RIDE,
There was a Stewards' Inquiry into the start focusing on JAKE ROCKS. After review, it was determined that JAKE ROCKS had broken through the stall door
beating the gate and therefore JACK ROCKS was disqualified and placed last prior to the result being declared official.

Chart seems poorly written to me. IMHO, the DQ was made for the bumping, not the break through, but who knows?

I don't know the rule.
Did not bet r3 yesterday.
May have been NYRA, may have been another track, but over the summer there was a similar incident where I needed a horse that had the same DQ.
Was upset that day. Personally(especially when I needed in multis! ), feel there's an argument that should be immediately declared a 'non-starter'. Happened 'before the race began'. Have not attempted to find/interpret/and further debate the rules and interpretations.
From what I remember, the ruling and then those that agreed with the ruling emphasized the "caused her own trouble" angle.

I'm not sue what the rules are or what went into the thinking, but here's one to ponder.

wow,
I 'get' the DQ there, but that ('declared non-starter') is also an opposing interpretation of the rule to the last two cases that I happened to notice

I've watched 40,000 US horse races across multiple tracks in the last 3 years and early breakers have only ever been either declared non-starters or ignored with result left to stand. I've never seen a single one that has been DQ'd before. This is the first I've seen where the early breaker could have otherwise been DQ'd due to other interference, but then that wouldn't really make logical sense either.
The most recent other examples I have seen were at Saratoga on Aug 27th where the early break was ignored, and Woodbine on Aug 28th where it was declared a non-starter. Thread http://www.paceadvantage.com/forum/s...d.php?t=166430

I remember when Pink Lloyd, a horse I bet against, broke through the gate early, ran poorly, and lost at miserly odds. I'm still pissed they declared him a non-starter. There has been little consistency when this happens even in the same jurisdiction, NYRA included.

I realize now that the somewhat recent time at NYRA was Make Mischief r7 8/27 fleet indian s.
chalk who fin 2nd and was kept 2nd
i thought incident cost her. Could be wrong.
but misremembered the incident;
wasn't officially ruled as having broken through the gate.
was mentioned in the chart as "after having appeared to have"
So it wasn't a DQ and not officially a decision to choose not to declare as a non-starter.

Plain and simple....what does the rulebook say. This cannot be a judgement call. Can it?

Same thing happened today R4 at Belmont once again.
broke through the gate and this time....
....no change. No DQ and no non-starter.
It seems we need a three-sided coin.

I too am confused about the recent stewards rulings regarding horses breaking through gate before their rivals. My past experience is these horses were ruled non-starters. NY stewards have been basing their decisions on was the order of finish affected.

yup, and the next questions i have are
* was there a steward's inquiry into the start following the race?
* will the official chart mention that their was an inquiry into the race?
if I were as irrational as the stewards i'd probably also curiously/apprehensively look at odds, placing, connections

yup, and I have a frame where all of the gates are still closed, while the has started to open.
I'm doing this tapping buttons from an ADW w/out any quality video systems like the stewards are supposed to be using.
