1 length = how many feet?

I've read anywhere from 8 to 10 feet. What do you use in your calculations?

While Gun Runner was strong the other dirt races seem very weak to me and would like to play against the winners next out.

For figure purposes I use 8 feet, but for display purposes (fractions, beaten lengths, etc.) I use 9 feet because that matches what you see in the official charts.
