Guys, I've been posting the open letter about the signal wars that I wrote for HANA everywhere around the web that I can think of... including the Del Mar Fan Forum. As it turns out a few of the SOCAL horsemen post there. They don't know me from Adam and a few of them seem to be doing their best to discredit my the industry needs to listen to the customer message about the signal wars. So be it. I'll eventually get the message across that the customer does deserve a voice and that I'm not a crackpot.

However, one thing that a horseman suggested to me was this: Since you love Thoroughbred Racing, I assume you love the Thoroughbred. How about some links to donations to retirement farms to keep these wonderful animals from slaughter houses. It would be a get step forward to see a fans group participate in this endeavor. LIRM has some great ideas in this regard for fans to participate.

The HANA site is brand new and we haven't even addressed what sites to link to on our links page. The only decision made so far has been that we should probably have a links page.

So here I am asking you guys for suggestions.

How about posting links to some of the more deserving retirement homes/farms for race horses? I absolutley LOVE the idea of adding a few of these to the links area of the HANA site.

Just a note - HANAblog will be in the Thoroughbred Bloggers alliance if they pass us. What comes with that is that we have to make a donation to a retirement foundation - very worthy. We also have to post a link to the one we choose.

I propose that we make that donation every year.

In fact, if we do start selling more merchandise and so on and raise a little revenue, I think a percentage should go to retirement homes. But I guess we can save that for a meeting.

Sorry to hear the horse folks are not seeing that we are here to grow the business so they and their children can make more cash in the long run too, Jeff. But keep trying.

Great idea Jeff, and one that I would strongly support:ThmbUp:

When I ran a racing syndicate I made sure the horses we owned went to good homes when we decided not to racing them anymore. It didn't dawn on me to do it any other way.

Why don't all owners take responsibility for either finding good homes for their horses or providing a home for their horses?

Seems to me, if you own a race horse then you should pay for it's retirement. If you can't afford to pay for your own horse's retirement then you can't afford to own horses.

It seems to me that some horse owners want not only more money from racing but they also want others to provide for the horses they no longer want to provide for.

If I'm missing part of the equation, please let me know. But this is how it appears to me.

You're of course right John, but we can't blame it on the horses that have irresponsible owners.

Sadly, you are correct.

I just took the liberty of adding links to Long Run (in Canada) and Old Friends on the blog sidebar.
I put it on the bottom, it isn't up to me to move up the donation part.

-jpHere is a link to the page in that thread where the discussion with JP starts:

It didn't appear to me that they were trying to discredit you, JP, but rather obtain more specifics from you given that their knowledge of HANA appears marginal except for poster rwwupi there who posted a HANA blog piece in that thread prior to your letter.

Good work on taking the initiative here.

A lot of talk there about getting 10% of a shrinking pie, instead of 5% of a growing pie. But that is what we expect from these groups.

They cant seem to figure out that when your pricing is too high already, raising it will result in less revenue. They still want a higher percentage of handle that won't be there tomorrow.

How many more years of wagering losses will we need before they change?

Thanks for doing the links CG!!!

IMHO, there ought to be a link to the university in PA that does research on horse injuries and treatment....I can't remember the name, but the Vet/Professor that took care of Barbaro works there.
