Family and divorce
New York will permit employees to take up to eight weeks of paid family leave. This is for bonding with a newborn, adopted or foster child, caring for a family member who is ill, or helping with a family member who is deployed on military service.

As predicted when family leave was first invented

So as a single taxpayer, I now am not getting equal protection under the law. But I have to pay for those re getting more.

Nice.

More shades of socialism. Ultimately your average "Joe" consumer/taxpayer foots the cost. If people can afford children and want them they should by all means have them. If they want a whole lot of extras they should cover that themselves also. Maybe there wouldn't be so many unwanted kids that end up cluttering the prison system, many killing others in the process.

Not going to waste time researching this, but for those who know all the particulars, what are the criteria for qualifying for this benefit and is it 100% employer financed?

It latches onto Disability policies. FYI, New York is one of 5 states that require Disability.

Q:
Who pays for PFL coverage?
A:
New York’s Paid Family Leave is entirely employee-funded. That is, the benefit is paid for by employees. Employers may collect the cost of Paid Family Leave through payroll deductions. The maximum employee contribution in 2018 shall be 0.126% of an employee’s weekly wage up to the annualized New York State Average Weekly Wage.
Q:
When do employers start deducting PFL contributions from employees’ paychecks?
A:
Private employers may begin PFL payroll deductions today. A public employer may opt into Paid Family Leave by submitting an application and plan to the Workers’ Compensation Board, along with providing notice to its employees at least 90 days before collecting employee contributions.
Q:
Do employers have to take deductions from their employees?
A:
Employers may deduct the premium cost for the Paid Family Leave insurance policy from employees through a payroll deduction or choose to cover the cost themselves.
Q:
Are PFL employee premium deductions collected pre- or post-tax?
A:
Premiums should be deducted from employees’ after-tax wages. Employers should report employee contributions on Form W-2 using Box 14 – State disability insurance taxes withheld.
Q:
What is the rate for employee contributions?
A:
The maximum Paid Family Leave benefit is based on the New York State Average Weekly Wage (NYSAWW). The 2016 NYSAWW used for this calculation is $1,305.92.

I wouldn't be happy at all having deductions taken from my paycheck to pay for this.

Why is it that so many benefits are given to people for having kids? I didn't realize that we're on the verge of extinction, or that making babies was too difficult of a task.

If you want to have kids, fine, but pay for them yourselves. We already pay tremendous amounts to send them to school. And don't argue that we all should be happy to educate the next generations for the sake of the country. Have you seen this generation? Good Lord, could they be more useless?
