In the far turn, the jocks try to get their horse in striking position, then hope they fire straightening for home. Is there anything else? Watching race after race, day after day, that seems like that's all there is to it. Sprint or route, dirt or turf.

However, the challenge lies in determining, first, whether the horse will be in striking position by that point, and then (if it is favorably positioned) whether it will be able to sustain a bid to the wire, both of which are based on analysis of considerations such as speed, pace, condition, class, and jockey -- not to even mention assessing how the horse's chance of winning in light of those factors compares to its odds.
