The Daily Double

Had a nice conversation with an old timer in an OTB about the double and he has made this wager his target bet for 50 years. His main emphasis was on ROI and for the most part avoiding the favorites in combinations and in general trying to hit the wager with a few select combinations as opposed to many combinations that bring down the ROI.

He plays occasional pick 3's but feels the percentages favor the doubles as you can hit the bet with much less combinations once again keeping tothe theme of what was the final ROI of the wager. Very interesting man.

Are there any other thoughts about this 'wager of the past' compared to the other super exotic wagers available today?

Thanks in advance.

JMHO---PROBABLY WRONG

I would think to make it pay out you would have to play all available on evey card to get the numbers to come out.

I would think your strike rate should be over 38% and be very stable.

I would think your b2b winner rate should be at least 25% to break even.

if you take your top 4 in both races you have 16 combinations and a pick 3 would have 64.

One of the guys that plays pick 3 will straighten this out but I think you have to be up the food chain to make a pick 3 pay off.

JMHO AND I DON'T PLAY PICK 3's FOR THE REASONS STATED ABOVE

GOOD LUCK

I love the double if I have one horse at decent odds in one leg and a vunerable favorite with it.

My friend in the OTB said similar...he trys to see how the losing public plays the double and how the wise guys look for combining two medium or decent priced combinations when his handicapping see fit.
