BC Marathon
Actually is now approaching a real stayer distance

Still think its a quarter mile short and should be on the green, but at least its moving in the right direction....

Favorite Long Distance Runner?
I enjoy these marathon races quite a bit. Is there a favorite runner that comes to mind?....on dirt that is.

The Breeders' Cup said that the newly configured Marathon will be the longest major stakes race on a main track in the U.S. this year.

Only the Breeder's Cup could try to claim this is a "major stakes race".

Last year the BC Marathon had a $500,000 purse. Increase the purse to $1M and it will become a a lot more significant.

There are plenty of big purses races that are pretty much insignificant. It doesn't matter if the best horses don't run, and at least in the US, they won't. In a race we had little chance in already, it is now going to be a virtual walkover for Europeans.

So, I guess the 1 3/4 mile San Juan Capistrano is just so much fluff?
NJS, I'll go you one better. Increase the purse to $5,000,000. I think the purses should be greater as the distance increases. And I think this should apply to every day racing too.

I have no problem with extending races if it is part of a program designed to increase stamina in race horses. Having one race in this country with a big purse isn't going to do very much though.

it could be a good betting race, especially once they get back to dirt.
The public is going to bet running lines, but a lot of these horses don't want 14 furlongs.

Its already brought dividends in that 12f and beyond races are now carded leading into it. The Brooklyn for example had become another run of the mill 9f race heading toward obscurity but now is something more interesting. And so what if it brings in Euros. Its supposed to be a world championship day. Why ignore the true stayers in that?
