The Electoral College is how the President is elected. The reason the Founders set it up this way was to ensure against California, for example, of doing that.

The EC is a great system of checks and balances. And most people are for such a common sense system...except when things don't go their way.
Popular vote majorities may be fine for pure democracies, but the U.S. was not founded as such.

Correct. The EC was established to reflect and support a system of government where the states had more power than the federal government except where needed, such as national defense and foreign relations.
Today the federal government has assumed more power than was ever intended for it to have, and the states let it happen.
