The track must have been running very fast as that figure is weak relative to the final time.

I'm actually more curious to find out what Gun Runner's Beyer was.

By most anecdotal accounts, the track was pretty darn fast...so not surprised by the muted Beyer fig...

But still, 104 seems to be about the norm for a 3yo in a Grade 1 these days in the spring...

Yeah, I agree. I was in no way trying to say the figure is "wrong" or anything like that. Just that Beyers are impossible to use for historical comparisons IMO. They've changed too much over the years.

Just about every dirt race had the winner within a second or less of the track record.

Considering gun runner mohaymen sudden breaking news and nyquist all had dirt beyers from low to mid 90s and looking at the margins 103 seems more than fair if not a tad high.

I like the MG+Nyquist combination that will do what it takes to win the race and not much more. MG is focused on winning the race; not pushing Nyquist to run as fast as he possibly can. We don't really know how fast Nyquist is yet. He always runs just fast enough to win the race he is in at the moment.

Sorting through my handicapping I noticed this, I'm running thoughts thru my head of this horse winning or that horse winning and their lifetime best Beyer is 95.

I predicted the beyer of the KD winner to get between 100 & 104 since the beyers were so low. I figured if Gun Runner would win, he would have received about a 102 or 103, wasn't good enough.

According to Jerry Brown on the TG site he was fifth best at least due to lack of ground loss.

Regarding Nyquist he did break that triple digit barrier. I thought he was a bet against due to his one turn races being his fastest and the only one two turn prep...have to hand it to Oneil.

Remember horses like In Excess and later Free House being third best 3yo but still earning huge figs. Is it the training methods, smaller foal crops, or speed figure methodology?

Horses in the 1990's & early to mid 2,000's were putting up some big beyers. In 1997, Solver Charm, Free House, Captain Bodgit & a few others were putting up big numbers.
