My laptop computer has been "checking for updates online" going on 2 hours. What is wrong with it?? My desktop computer downloaded updates today with no issue. Both Windows 7 .

Windows 7 users seem to be getting very screwed lately when it comes to updating Windows.

Some say it's a conspiracy to get you to switch to Windows 10. I have a Windows 10 machine and it checks for updates and downloads them as fast as lightning compared to my Windows 7 machine.

There are also a few fixes and updates and articles out there explaining things that MIGHT speed up your update process in Windows 7. Just google it and you should find some useful information...

If it's a conspiracy seems it should have picked my older and more expensive computer. Instead it picked my cheaper and newer laptop. Both with the same Windows 7 . Desktop = HP product. Laptop = Toshiba.

I can't get anything to find the problem.

Wow...I clicked on the Fix it link and it said found problems and fixed them. Then I went to the Check for updates page and same thing..still checkecking for updates... But about an hour later after letting the computer sit idle, it say Updates are ready to be downloaded. Thanks..I'm just glad to get them. I have no idea what problems it fixed, but obviously it did. I'll know for certain when restarting the computer when it's finished installing and updating..
Big Thanks!

No, if it took an hour, it didn't fix the problem.

I had the same problem as you, and tried a bunch of different fixes, but I don't think any of them worked, which is why I thought Dave's link probably wouldn't work, but it was worth a shot. There are a few other articles and websites out there that have other things you can try. If I remember, I will try and hunt them down again.

Here's the thing, It redownloaded the "Get Windows 10 Update along with all the rest> I can take it out when I search through my desktop computer to find which number to delete. Maybe they have decided to force that update if you want the other updates for the Toshiba laptop... I have it disabled on the Desktop computer and it never does that.
At least my computer is up to date. It had been awhile.

That was just the first wave of updates...Now there are 8 more important updates being downloaded. I had not checked since Feb on the laptop. But I see on the desktop there were many on March 21st and even more today. I have it set to check with me before doing anything and I don't use the laptop but once and awhile.

Best guess is that the FORCED Win10 was taking the time.

I have heard how they use a kind of Bit Torrent approach. I believe that can be an issue.

If I were you, I might also consider that the problem could be something as simple as a inconsistent internet connection. That is, the update files are downloading, then the connection breaks and it starts again.

I have heard that some providers do this to big time bandwidth users to curb their bandwidth. Actually ran into something similar in a Hilton hotel a few years ago. The hotel advertised a fast connection but it breaks about every 10 seconds.

At the time, I was trying to download an 80mb Android language programming installation. After an hour of trying I called Hilton and they told me that only "preferred customers" get the usable bandwidth.

Are you kidding?

On the machine with the slow downloads just upgrade to Windows 10. I was also hesitant to go to 10 from 8.1 and haven't had any problems. Actually the upgrade was accidental on my part because I clicked thinking I was just placing 10 on my computer instead of having it installed. It's worked out okay but it did take about an hour to upgrade then add the learning time. Btw, it's been over 6 months.

Don't you have to decide soon whether you want the free upgrade or not?

Given Microsoft's desire to put everyone on a subscription model, it's hard for me to believe the Windows 10 upgrade from a prior Windows OS will ever cost anything.

I could be wrong but it's difficult for me to imagine a business case to start charging customers who wait past their deadline to do an upgrade they desperately want everyone to make.

I assume shortly after the one year deadline passes, you'll find it's been extended.

No, it will be a required update. some people are already finding W10 installed without their permission. That will spread like wildfire soon.
MS has one business model - screw everyone.

Just did my taxes, and I getting a refund, so a Chrome Book is imminent.
MS has nothing to offer that is not offered by others.

From what I've been reading, the upgrade is only free for the first year Windows 10 is available. Windows 10 was officially released on 07/29/2015 and the upgrade will remain free for qualified users until 07/28/2016.

It sure sounds like you're getting the forced Win10 upgrade, Fly. If you don't want it (I know that I don't), use this program to help you refuse the upgrade. Hopefully, you are not too late as it appears from your description that the process may have already started.
