Any Chance before 2020 ?
I believe it's Jan 2020, the date that Microsoft ends support for Windows 7. Is there any chance that some future software company could invent a program (for W7 users)for sale to the general public, that could continue to protect computers on the internet from hackers, before 2020. They could charge a hefty fee for those of us that don't want to go to Windows 10.
I know it didn't happen in the case of Windows XP, but that was some ago.
This software for protection of Windows 7 could be made so it has to be renewed each year so the software maker could continue making a profit for those that don't want W10. Is it simply that no company has the resources to do this or that there is no market for it?
I know younger generation is mostly happy to move on to Windows 10, but I'm not part of them.

I think you worry too much. If Windows 7 is OK to use now, odds are it will be OK to use 5-10 years from now in terms of hackers being able to get in there and ruin your life.
As long as you're using a decent antivirus, and Windows 7 is up to date on its last day of support, I wouldn't sweat it so much...
Scaring you into upgrading is part of the marketing pitch.

The last I heard was that Identity Thieft was one of if THE fastest growing crime out there. And you are right, Microsoft uses the last date of support as a marketing and scare tool. By 2020, there may be something entirely different available in the computer world..

Keep an open mind on this topic. Yes, part of what M$ is trying to do is have you upgrade to their latest O/S. Granted, if you don't want or need any of the new fuctionality, this translates into a pain. Believe me when I say, I'm not a fan of Microsoft.
BUT. BUT.
There is also the issue of trying to support an endless permuation of old operating systems. So think of it in terms of money they spend to support your old o/s. Even on the Linux side of things, three years of support for an o/s release is considered "long term".
When is the last time you went down to your local Ford dealer and asked for a oil filter for a 1927 Model T? Same thing.

That 2020 date is for high end protection paid for by corporations, is it not?
I though general support for W7 was already ended?

I wonder how profitable it will be for hackers who target the user base of W7 after 2020. I assume they will find some vulnerability that will remain unpatched, but then what?
How much work do you put into finding one of the by then minuscule % of users still on that system? And are they actually a high value target?
Does anyone worry about vulnerability today because they still run Windows 98?

Not many. The trend is for the industry to have websites that don't support transactions with browsers on that can be installed and run on the old operating systems.

Just because Microsoft ends support for something doesn't mean it stops working. I have several old programs I love and use every day that Microsoft stopped supporting year's ago.
