We lost a true Legend: John Nerud, 102

R.I.P John Nerud. The racing community lost an icon and a legend.

Oh, no! One of the ones, for sure, that was a giant in this game. I always remember this quote of his:

"A bad day at the track is better than a good day anywhere else."

RIP, Mr. Nerud.

I mean this man raced against people like Jim Fitzsimmons, Ben and Jimmy Jones, Allen Jerkens, and Frank Whitely among others. He will always be attached to the name of Dr. Fager. He will be missed.

Sad news - he was a legend.

Byk will undoubtedly have some good coverage of his life coming up.

The world record was tied a few years ago but Dr. Fager carrying 134 while Najran was 113. So that's not even comparable.

That recording might be what they pipe in these days!

That was before my time. I remember Ogygian being a very good horse he trained. He kept him together very well, horse had lots of problems.

His son had Cozzene, who was extremely good. He assisted.

Also, he made a big impression with Dr. Fager here in California, because he was the first one to ship in the day before the race, not even attempting to acclimate the horse. The horse flew in, ran the next day, and took a redeye out and was back in his stall in New York on Sunday morning.

I vividly recall reading about Dr Fagers giant world record race...

Later that same year, Dr Fager along with Fort Marcy and the best of the turf horses in America were the talk of the town....The Morning Telegraph, and all of the Jersey & NYC newspapers were buzzing big time about the showdown to come at Atlantic City Racehorse, for the United Nations Handicap....

My racing buddies and I drove downstate to catch that great race...

Dr Fager making his one and only turf start, won it by a nose, and my play, Fort Marcy got shutoff up the rail and got third, but was comin on strong....A thriller right to the line..And, DF was as game as they come right to the line, battling the whole way round...

I became of Loyal Nerud fan from that day on...

RIP John Nerud

Good articles, one from a couple of months ago.
The man lived and breathed horse racing.
