Visited an Irish Racing Pub

Not enough time to visit a track in Ireland. Had to settle for visiting a racing pub. What I found was a friendly place where old men gathered to chat. What I saw was that most bets were made out of a newspaper, not even a racing form like the Post. With the lack of information available, I didn't make a single bet. But it was an enjoyable experience. One guy talked my ear off once he found out that I grew up in metro Detroit.

Hope you had a great time there, Al.

You needed to stop into a betting shop - they are like 7/11s over there.
You would find the past performance racing pages hanging on the wall.
Nothing like as detailed as the past performances in the US - there are
way too many pace and track condition variables there to attempt them.

Still, the bettors play their favorite angles - jockeys, trainers, etc.,
with around the same success as bettors do here. Not as many exotics.
They do, however, parlay bets a lot. That's where they try to make a score.
They, also, follow the money bet. Bookmakers' odds pricing is crucial.

Every betting shop, or bookie joint if you like, has a pub close by.
That is where "the lads" have a few pints and talk sports.
Racing is always high on the topic list in Ireland, but trails soccer and rugby.

Things have changed since my time there, though.
The mobile (cell) phone is now king when it comes to placing bets.
It's made it way too easy to get down on any type of action - day or night.
Keeps the lads in the pub longer, too.

They had a Paddy Power OTB just around the corner from the pub. Not only was it a good time, but it was just nice seeing people playing for fun not taking the game so serious. They might have a better prospective on life. It seems so to me on many different levels.

I love people playing for fun. We need all of those we can get. I've personally never had much fun losing at anything, betting included

I don't advocate betting to lose. It can become a terrible habit.

Very true, just like anything else. But the majority that play leisurely don't become addicted gamblers. And let's be realistic, most of the people that play lose, serious or for fun.

I know those playing for fun are pigeons. But it makes me wonder about our life style as being too driven and competitive at the cost of enjoying our journey.

Yes, I agree. But within reason, I didn't see any big bets, we can allow ourselves some fun.

We start gambling because it's fun. We like it so much, in fact...that most of us intend on doing it for our entire lives. But to do it for a lifetime...you have to be able to achieve a certain proficiency in the game that you choose...otherwise you won't be able to afford it for long. And proficiency doesn't come to those who consider "fun" to be their main motivation.

Lots of people have no shot at wining, jut a dream.
They go to track to socialize, make a few small bets, have a dream every day, and mostly, be there and not at home.

Probably spend far less a week than they would on one BB game.

In a way, they really are winners.

This is true...but it's been my misfortune to have never been one of those players. To me, fun can only be had when I play a game as well as I can play it.

My father-in-law came to America in 1957, having grown up in a small farming community in the north of Ireland. Not Northern Ireland, mind you, but the north of what would be the Irish Republic. Anyhow, back then the pub and the bookmaker were the center of daily social life. All the gentlemen knew how to drink, and they knew how to gamble, both without making a very difficult life any more difficult.
