The first year I started playing
Balto Star. 20 bucks across that got burned in the first quarter mile.....I think they ran it in something like 21.
Can't remember if it was my primary bet......but I do remember how stupid it was. Pletcher was just getting rolling if my memory serves me

Plenty of bad Derby bets, but the one I remember the most was the first Derby I ever bet...

That was a great derby for me......loved Monarchos after seeing him win the Fla derby & running a nice 2nd in the Wood to Congaree.
But, although I had the exacta small, which paid big, Invisible Ink cones flying in to nip Congaree by a measley nose for 2nd at 55-1.......& I had a Moarchos 10-1 with a Congatee 7-1 exacta pretty big, grr......pissed me off big time, couldn't stop thinking of Invisible Ink nipping out Congaree by a nose for over a month.
Not only that, but I had a triple, Monarchos with Congaree with all several times, & I can't believe I didn't play Monarch's, with all, with Congaree.
Still a good derby, but could have been so much better, I'm sure everyone has been there.
And yes, that 1st quarter & half was insanely fast!

The Deputy in 2000 or whatever year Fu Peg won.
Bet ArchArchArch in 2011, and still believe he would have run huge if not hurt.
Bet Gemologist in 2012, which was just terrible.

I have bet the Derby since 2005. Here is my record of futility....
2005: Sun King (15th)
*2006: Lawyer Ron (12th)
2007: Great Hunter (13th)
2008: Anak Nakal (7th)
2009: Dunkirk (11th)
2010: American Lion (7th)
2011: Mucho Macho Man (3rd)
2012: Daddy Nose Best (10th)
2013: Verrazano (14th)
2014: Ride On Curlin (7th)
*The only saving grace from this list is that I had Lawyer Ron boxed with Barbaro, Bluegrass Cat and Showing Up in the exacta. That payoff ($587) sorta makes me feel a little better.....

No offense FF, but I do now believe you are required to release your Derby pick in highlights, rainbows, and high end alerts; and available to everybody on this forum.

Since I've been doing this seriously:
2014- Wicked Strong (although I had Chrome in numerous doubles and pick 3s)
2013- Verrazano
2012- Union Rags (could've won the TC with a better ride in the Derby)
2011- Comma to the Top (yes, really)
2010- Noble's Promise
2009- Pioneer of the Nile
2008- Pyro
2007- Scat Daddy
2006- Bob and John
2005- Bandini
2004- Smarty Jones (only winner)
That makes for a record of 11-1-1-0. This year, I hope Dortmund makes it 2-12.

I've been either picking a horse or actually betting on the Derby since 1970, when as a little kid at my parent's Derby party I drew Dust Commmander out of a hat I was hooked.
Since then, there's been plenty of ups and downs, but here's some of the true head-scratchers or just plain contrarian picks:
1973: Sham
1982: Laser Light
1984: Pine Circle
1987: Cryptoclearance (still my favorite horse name of all time)
1994: Southern Rhythm
1995: Jumron
1996: Unbridled's Song - bar shoe and all
2002: Request for Parole
2005: Afleet Alex (this is after I told my wife in January that Giacomo was my pick. I got off him after that crappy Roger Stein horse finished in front of him in the Santa Anita Derby.
I will say that the past decade or so has been good to me though, with the exception of Mine That Bird, who I couldn't bet on the replay.
