Video Poker Discussion

An old horrid habit has reered it's ugly head again.....video poker...

Not saying I'm smart for playing it but it is what it is....

With all the sharpies on this forum is there any strategy you use when going to battle in this game?

Win like 300 on weds playing 50 cent and lost 600 playing $1 video poker 5 credits......

I know I'm making mistakes.....breaking openers for straight draws, taking the flush with 1 to the royal etc etc etc....

Anybody have experience id be glad to hear it thanks!!

Well, there's plenty of strat online about how to play. It really depends on the payout chart for the machine as well as the type of poker being played (dueces wild, jacks or better, etc.).

It's a slot machine, so all your bets are likely to be -EV. But like blackjack without card counting or craps, you can play a strategy that minimizes your losses long term.

Video poker machines exist in just about every bar in New Orleans.
The company installs an alarm & cameras for you and gives you a bank to pay winning tickets...what bar wouldn't do it??

It is regulated by the State Police and they DO NOT play around.
If you unplug a machine they will be at your business faster than if you dialed 9-1-1...you cannot put an OUT OF ORDER sign on a broken machine either.
Employees at one bar would track the jackpots and when they were hit. When they suspected a machine was about to pay off they would put an OUT OF ORDER sign on it and, after closing, play that machine until it pays.
Seen it happen...highest payoff is $500.

I used to play but don't anymore. Although, every time I go back to New Orleans I throw a 20 in the machine for old times sake. Heading there for Thanksgiving...my strategy is to play Deuces Wild and bet max creds every time.

In my opinion if you don't hit a royal flush the most you can grind is 400.....and can lose a dime if you go cold....

I'm a complete moron for doing this but besides a nice win in connecticut playing 20/40 stud I can't win planting cards.....deal it 40 hours a week only makes me play worse

If a machine is truly random, there is no way to predict when a machine is "due" to hit. It could hit 2 royals in a row or go thru multiple cycles before it hits. Just a matter of luck as to when it hits. Playing the machine correctly lessens your losses in the long run and gives a profit in the long run if playing +EV machine. Playing video poker at some Indian casinos or other places is a crapshoot since the payoffs are not truly random no matter what the tables say! A check of local regulations is needed.

Quite a few good players have come from a dealing background - when you are dealing, how hard is it to tell which are the 'weakest' players?

As far as video poker goes, some seem to have better pay-out rates than others. A guy on 2+2 mentioned someone finding some machines programmed to pay ?? 5000 for quads instead of the normal 500 ??, which made it +ve EV for him.

I 100 percent read that video poker story on 2+2....it was classic....you were referring to the "double up" option....what a read that was!!!

I have not played in years. When I played, this was the critical issue. The first question is what do the hands pay. There were two basic machines, 9-6 and 8-5. The first payed 9 for a full house and 6 for a flush. The second paid 8 and 5 for those hands. An 8-5 machine gives terrible odds. I don't know if the basics like this have changed over the years.

In my opinion...you can be a great poker player without knowing how to handle your chips. I was playing high-stakes poker for 20 years without even knowing what a poker chip felt like.
