TVG appearance 10-22

I'll be on in about 15 minutes, around 1230 EDT / 930 PDT. We'll be discussing last weekend's racing with focus on TimeformUS Speed Figures. The blog I write weekly is here:

Thanks for the link, CJ.

I always catch your posts of TV appearances too late. But I don't get TVG anyway, except when I get it on U-Verse late afternoons on the FoxSportLive.

It would be awesome if you could post those appearances on YouTube.

I heard most of your interview, CJ. Although I didn't know it was you at the time because I didn't remember your name.

Anyway, the best part for me was your subdued praise for horses benefitting from the dirt rail bias at Saratoga. Spoken like a guy not prone to hyperbole.

Thanks guys, I try to give my honest assessment without putting down other's assessments. We are all wrong a lot more than we are right in this game.

I'm on pretty much every Wednesday around the same time. Sometimes it is 30 minutes earlier if racing starts earlier as it will when winter approaches.

On today, looks like video is back for this week via Skype. It always makes it better because I can see the guys without the satellite propagation delay and communication is easier.

Should start just after 12 ET / 9 PT with Paul and Matt. Here is the written blog:

Early, middle or late?

On the show last week you mentioned something about the opening fraction's speed being “more important” than the final time when it comes to determining a speed figure. Or something like that.

On a route turf race, I always thought the closing fraction to be the more important because most turf races start off slow (not turf sprints, I haven’t the foggiest idea how to handicap those). Although, sometimes I look for the middle move, for example, in the Kentucky Derby, I’ve noticed that horses that make strong middle moves, such as Curlin and Oxbox, are the ones to bet in the Preakness.

If that is how it was taken, I didn't say it properly. Final time is still the biggest factor in the TimeformUS Speed Figures, but we do adjust to the pace of the race as well. The adjustements depend on surface and distance, but fall into those categories:

---Fast Pace...speed horsesupgraded.
---Slow Pace...speed horses downgraded.
------Turf Routes, slow pace...closers upgraded.

We actually did a blog post about that day, very tough day. How do you define a number being off? Just visual?
