Good Book

Hi. I have just finished reading a book that i think many on this list would enjoy. It is titled "Pin Action" and chronicles the days and lives of a world of gamblers that existed in the bowling alleys of yesteryear. Interesting similarities to the slow motion demise of our beloved sport. Very easy read with a lot of insight into life.

Well I ain't no "Teach"...(some posters will remember him)....and you've probably mis-interpreted that I was in some of those in the book....probably not...but I do have some bowling hustling stories...

My fondest...the mechanic at our establishment was an Ok arrogant right hander who was not above rigging the lanes...(ie...oil patterns) the most common thing of course...he once shot 879 on a pair he set up perfectly for his style and ruined a good tourneyment that was going on monthly...it was so obvious...every-one quit going and that was that...

We also had some pretty high dollar pot games going weekly...in general he had to keep that fairly level....Now I'm a lefty/southpaw (when it comes to bowling)...and in general we have it rougher...except when we don't...then we have a distinct advantage...so one night...I won 3 times and another lefty won twice...nobody was happy of course...after all...Righties are 7/1 ratio and they pay the bills...

I knew what was going to happen the next week...the left side would be flooded with no shot...period...it was expected and understood...normally I wouldn't have even bothered to show up....but I had been practicing for THIS EXACT scenerio for a year...(mind you...for big money tourney's...not a local pot game...still tho)...I was really the only serious tourney bowler around...

Anyways....long story short....I shot 300 the 1st game...and everybody quit...it was pretty awesome...

Smokey, this is not 'Nam, this is bowling. There are rules...

One of the greatest movie scenes ever, and featuring a bowling alley (so I am slightly On Topic):

I'd love it too.
When I was in high school, our town bowling alley was all manual.
Pin setters, a pool table up in the bar room.....right out of the movies.

In my junior year, they built a brand spanking new-fangled modern alley with all automation, alleys upstairs and downstairs, a LOUNGE, not a bar! My Mom even worked part time there as a hat check girl.

Funny, it burned to the ground after two years of losing money.

A hard core still went to the old one.
Met a lot of characters there.

Never dealt with anyone who crossed over in my circles...keep them seperate...Richie was before my time...he was 60's/70's...I was mainly in the mid 90's and again in the mid 2000's....injury in between for 8 years...sucked..

am definitely going to read that book...

Another good/bad about bowling...if you bowl long enough...the breaks even out...

Bowling in a tourney for 10k....semi-finals...10th...I was pretty much beat...against the new fad type of bowler...2 handed...he is still currently on tour and a champion of the PBA....(not going to mention his name tho)...how-ever...this was not a PBA event....luckily for him...all he had to do was mark....he threw a pocket 7-10...match over...I win...he started throwing chairs/obscenities ...etc...it WAS bad....they would have booted him....Championship match...started using 2 different balls on different lanes...threw 1st 8...10k...mine...

How-ever...2 x's the following year....in Vegas...at an event called the high rollers & similiar...just needing a mark in the 10th frame to advance...BAMM....pocket 7-10's...ouch..

I read this book about 6 months ago...and I liked it a lot. I remember watching Ernie Schlegel in those old Chris Shenkel/Bo Burton bowling telecasts. Who knew that Ernie Schlegel had such a colorful hustling career...he was such a clean-cut guy.

I bowled with Hugh Miller for years. A pretty good lefty in his own right.

Maybe the two-handed technique will be what wins most in the future with young people doing it more...seems like one can put a lot more spin on the ball, which creates the necessary hook as it strikes the pins, the hook so the ball strikes the pins at the proper cross-angle is the key to strikes, I have been informed...

Nelson Burton Jr. was the best I ever saw play the game.

As far as the two handed technique, I have only recently learned of it.

Bowling is great fun no matter how good you are at it. I once thought I could be a professional but learned differently.

Another great lefty, and from our area, the great Earl Anthony.
