Laptop freezing

My Laptop keeps freezing. It is getting worse. Very frustrating when I am placing a bet. Sometimes it was a good thing LOL. I have tried the Control. Alt, delete, no success. It is not happening when I am running a certain program?. I even downloaded my certain file's on a thumb drive then reset the laptop to factory defaults. I certainly do not want to buy a new computer. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks

I assume it’s a windows machine. Do a search on the entire drive (hidden files too) for “*.tmp “ files. Make sure no programs are running when you do this. Delete any found. If you find a crap load you may be able to decipher which program is leaving them behind. That’s step 1

Clear browser cache. Also try a program like CC cleaner, PC cleaner etc to clear crap out of system. I wouldn't just delete files that I don't know what they do.

Tmp files are leftover files from apps/programs that don’t close correctly or crash while in use. They are created by programs while they are running, to swap data/text etc while you’re working. Lots of them being leftover is a symptom of a corrupt program etc.

The leftovers can screw up and crash an app when it tries to create new ones to work with, sone older programs even use the same name for the temps that are created, and when they see the file has already resident, the app crashes or locks the system up.

This is old school troubleshooting because most modern apps don’t use them or they clean them up by themselves on startup. But not all.

If there are a ton of them, you can use the info to determine which program is behaving badly.

Your suggestion on the cache etc was going to be step 2……

How old is the laptop? Could it be overheating?

You might want to check your EVENT VIEWER to see if there are any ominous warnings/failures/errors

Here's a how-to:

After 40 years I learn something new(not). Just not a good idea to delete stuff, because you might delete stuff you weren’t supposed to. Sh** happens. Better to let the system or a program take care of it.

Boot a Linux live USB.

If it freezes sometime after it fully boots, then your problem almost certainly lies with your hardware.

Here is a short YouTube tutorial on how to create and boot a Linux live USB:

If you try Linux Mint (as shown in the tutorial) choose the XFCE desktop, as it is relatively lightweight.

In my opinion, this could be overheating, a power supply starting to go bad, or some malware causing this issue. Good luck Chris, let us know the outcome.

Thank you all for your ideas on this. Tried everything I could do with the constant freezing. I purchased a mini desktop. Intel NUC 11 pro. We shall see. My laptop is 8 years old. It was time. Thanks again
