Grand National
Holy Crap! I counted 27 horses that fell out of a field of 40. Is it normal to lose over half of them?
Exciting race, though. I was exercising and found myself jumping every time a hedge came.

It was a high count this year, I saw a lot of horses taking others out when falling then I've seen in previous years, although it looked like the Gold Cup winner came down on his own accord at Beecher's.
Now we can sit back and wait for the PETA press releases for the horse we lost just before Beecher's.

Fun race to watch and good to get away from American flat racing and take a look at how some real horses run. Hope you got some good exercise.

Gold Cup winner Synchronised was put down also...going to be a huge storm now after this....if you didn't see, Syn dumped McCoy before the start and went down the track for a couple of furlongs before being caught and sent back to the start

I saw that. He didn't really run too far, though, do you think?
When you say "put down" do you mean what I think you mean?
Never mind, I just got this Tweet:
Cornelius Lysaght @CorneliusRacing #GN2012: confirmation from track Synchronised & According To Pete suffered fatal injuries #bbcracing

I did. I think I should watch hurdle racing every morning. Really helped my calves.

The question that comes to mind is....did you clear all of them?

Saw a HD replay, Syn actually got back up and continued running with no visible signs of distress, so I wonder what happened to him, heart attack? According to Pete had no chance, you could see in the background when he got up that his fore left leg was snapped.

Hind leg fracture, according to the Racing Post.
Synchronised carried on riderless but stopped at the fence after the Canal Turn andwas put down after being found to have a hind-leg fracture.

One year , when they had had so much rain that the going was nearly unraceable , they only had 2 finishers . I think it was about 10 years back , the year when they had a scare with foot and mouth and the Cheltenham Festival had been cancelled ( no Cheltenham and no Aintree in one season and jump racing in England would be a virtual non event ) so they went ahead with the Grand National anyway.
A hideous race , imho - something I wouldn't subject a horse to.

Last year's running was brutal.
I think they lost 4 horses and had to skip some jumps because the injured/put down horses hadn't been moved by the time the field came around again.
They laid there under a tarp until the race finished.

2001 Red Marauder I think is the one you're thinking off, think a couple actually remounted and continued on with 4 official finishers

Changes and safety measures are badly needed and it looks like
they have no choice but to finally do them.

Let's hope not.
Jump racing is safe. The horses are traveling much slower than in flat racing. It is rather common for them to fall, but rarely are they hurt.
I watch a ton of it...I don't see anybody get hurt any more than Flat race..maybe much less so..
It was a fluke.
