Cliff Clavin has a habit of posting numbers that cannot be taken at face value, he has done it with Covid, the job report, and now shoplifting. For someone who claims to be smart, he sure makes stupid arguments, I doubt he could win a debate against a fifth grader. Shoplifting is up in California, prosecuting it is down. Stores are not be shuttered in areas soft on property crime for no good reason. Liberal run states are definitely getting softer on crime by the day.

That story is a year old. Those stores shut down in 2020 during the Trump pandemic. That’s why they closed along with thousands of other businesses.

That’s what statements from Walgreens officials will tell you. Walgreens executives not some stock boy or some low level police lieutenant.

That is false. Charges are filed in 70% of shoplifting cases. If police are called and the store wants to press charges it will happen. If Walgreens is dumb enough to ignore shoplifting, then they deserve to lose stores. But if they don’t, if they call police, offenders will be charged.

It’s not that police refuse to arrest shoplifters; it’s that stores don’t call police. Nevertheless, shoplifting in California is down from the past.

The stores that closed had a total of 319 incidents of shoplifting since the start of 2018, an average of one every four days across several stores. Three things caused the closures. The pandemic cost people their jobs and took away their spending money. Remote work kept people away from the area around the stores. Walgreens over extended. They built too many stores in the area. In San Francisco alone there are 59 retail Walgreens stores even after the shutdowns.

Of course it looks bad if they admit they managed so poorly, so they blame shoplifters. I

Dominicks closed its North Riverside store a few years ago. The Door was barely closed before Tony’s Finer Foods moved in. They later moved across the street into Berwyn, but as far as shopping goes, that is a distinction without a difference.
Recently the Jewel in town closed, but an even bigger grocery is moving in after some major remodeling. Aldi is opening a store in the Village. And we have a Costco. There is no danger of a food desert, especially since this shoplifting danger is completely overblown.

Critics of Prop 47 argue criminals have become emboldened in San Francisco. Shoplifting there has forced at least 17 Walgreens to shut their doors, according to several media reports.

Data shows San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin has dramatically reduced the number of shoplifting cases he has chosen to prosecute since taking office in Jan. 2020. Prosecutions for theft under $950 dropped from 70% under the previous DA, to 44% under Boudin in 2020. That number rose 6% by mid-June 2021.
