Way back in the day, a cheap little maiden claimer wins his debut at LGA and is sent to Montana to a track called Metrapark, or something close to that, and wins the two little stake races they ran there for 2 yr olds by double digit lengths. He comes back to LGA to race in the Gottstein Futurity after that little trip. He's coupled in the betting with another. On the other horse, who also made the trip to Montana and returned, the great Canadian jockey, Chris Loseth, comes down from what was then Exhibition Park to ride, and on the subject horse, a young but proven SoCal jockey, Alex Solis, comes up to take the mount. The entry is 6/1 and I just can't figure out to save my life why the 2 best jockeys in the race are on these two horses. But it's enough of a reason for me to put $20 on them. Then they race. Maharesred, with Solis up, stalks the lone speed, the leading two yr old filly that year, Flame McGoon, to the 1/4 pole, and then just blows up, winning by many open lengths, punching his ticket to the Breeders Cup Juvenile.
He gets it handed to him at the big show, but for one day at LGA, he was the big dog that very few saw until he came around the corner and barked real loud. I believe he ended up in SoCal for awhile as a 3 and 4 year old.
