Way back in the day, a cheap little maiden claimer wins his debut at LGA and is sent to Montana to a track called Metrapark, or something close to that, and wins the two little stake races they ran there for 2 yr olds by double digit lengths. He comes back to LGA to race in the Gottstein Futurity after that little trip. He's coupled in the betting with another. On the other horse, who also made the trip to Montana and returned, the great Canadian jockey, Chris Loseth, comes down from what was then Exhibition Park to ride, and on the subject horse, a young but proven SoCal jockey, Alex Solis, comes up to take the mount. The entry is 6/1 and I just can't figure out to save my life why the 2 best jockeys in the race are on these two horses. But it's enough of a reason for me to put $20 on them. Then they race. Maharesred, with Solis up, stalks the lone speed, the leading two yr old filly that year, Flame McGoon, to the 1/4 pole, and then just blows up, winning by many open lengths, punching his ticket to the Breeders Cup Juvenile.

He gets it handed to him at the big show, but for one day at LGA, he was the big dog that very few saw until he came around the corner and barked real loud. I believe he ended up in SoCal for awhile as a 3 and 4 year old.

Back in 1982-83 at Bay Meadows I saw a horse trained by Doc Severinson's son Alan in a maiden special race. I saw that in its first race the time of the six furlong race was in the high 112's or low 113's and since then the horse had a six furlong work in 111.3! She was going off at 35/1 and won huge. Her name was Moment to Buy and she went on to win several stakes at BM and perhaps some in Socal. The second race was a low level claimer so I mated up the four best with MTB and the second race winner also paid 35/1. I think the $2 Double was between $1200-1300. Good way to start the day.

John Henry

Saw him run at Aqu for a tag in 1978 when he was just an average claiming allowance horse.

John Henry was one tough horse. Saw him quite a few times at Hollywood. Winning Colors, Ferdinand, Melair, Gate Dancer(cost me a pick six) and too many I can’t remember.
