Incident in the SAR TEST Stakes
A very tough sight to see Maple Leaf Mel go down at the wire in the Test Stakes after leading the entire race.
Reminded me of Go for Wand in an early BC race many years ago.
I feel for all those connected to that fine NY Bred filly.

Just brutal.
Horse of a lifetime I'm sure for all the connections. Been patient with her and built her up for this moment.
Devastating.

She would have been 6-for-6 in her career and 1st Grade 1 of her lifetime.
This wasn't very good to see. The quietest TV on FOX, and probably the track, has ever been for an accident like this.

As heart breaking as I've seen in the game. Would be a nice gesture if Goldolphin gave the winning trophy to the connections of Maple Leaf Mel.

The trainer is 32-3-3-5.
What a harsh way to get started.

I swear this sport can't catch a break. When more eyeballs the usual are watching today because Cody's Wish was running, this happens. We should be celebrating what would have been a great victory, instead we are heartbroken by the loss of what could have been a great filly. Just brutal.

What does the trainer record have to do with this?

Tragic for the hore, connections and we fans.
As a result HISA will probably move the remainder of the Saratoga meet to Finger Lakes.

I think the point is, how even more devastating for this to happen to someone just starting their training career. While having a breakdown like this would be horrific to a 10,000 start trainer, I imagine the long-term effects will be of a different magnitude to her.
That's at least how I read it.

The long term prospects for this sport keep deteriorating. It’s bad enough when we lose one, but to lose one on one of the biggest racing days right in front 40k+ people and a national TV audience is not going to help keep or gain new fans. That was gut wrenching.
