Lester Piggott dies. The greatest jockey of all time.

Lester Piggott widely admired as the best jockey of all time has died at 86.

He rode 30 Classic winners including the Derby an incredible 9 times. Who can forget when he came out of retirement to win the Breeders Cup Mile on Royal Academy in his mid 50's.

During his long career there wasn't a person in the UK, interested in racing or not, who didn't know who he was.

RIP Lester.

Vividly remember his awful fall off Mr. Brooks turning for home in the Breeder's Cup back in the 90's. For minutes he just laid there as if he'd were dead.
RIP

Sorry to hear this. I read one of the books written about him after the Royal Academy win. Exceptional.

Thanks for posting.

Obviously I'm a 'States' snob and never heard of him.

Just spent 2 hours researching and enjoying the travel you sent me down and am now desperately searching for replays of Sir Ivor races.

Not great quality but here are a couple.

Thank you very much. (I can never hear the rumbling of the hooves enough either.)

The Royal Academy Breeders' Cup Mile, which Piggott came out of retirement to win in his mid 50's, didn't get the attention it deserved because it came 1 race after Go For Wand's death in the Distaff. But it was a truly great moment. RIP.

Couldn't agree more, I remember the ride left such a strong impression on me at the time, the way he positioned the horse early was uncanny, probing through the field, subtly gliding past two different traffic incidents in the first 3/8ths, either of which likely would've cost him the race if even a single stride was broken. The 'maestro' played this field to perfection. For someone who rode the course every day I'd say wow great ride, but to do this over unfamiliar ground besides it honestly left me awestruck.

Lester figures large in a terrific book entitled 'Never Say Die,' named for the horse he rode to his first Epsom Derby win. Horse racing fans should add it to their must-read list.

I enjoyed seeing a young Trevor Denman interviewing Lester following the Breeders Cup win.

My son in law sent a link about Sir Lester from The Economist:

Here's a good story about Never Say Die's connections:
