Fairmount Park gets Casino Games and Sports betting

Bad horses running for big purses, with casino gaming. Mountaineer Park of the Midwest.

not bad, because casino gaming is great entertainment when you spend a lot of time at home in quarantine

Sports betting is up and running, but the casino is still a ways away from operational. Intertrack wagering at Fairmount has taken a huge hit over the past 20 years. The place used to be crowded but now it is practically empty. I would say it is 90% less than what it had been.

Maybe Fairmount and Hawthorne can get a circuit going? It would seem to be in everyone’s best interest (then again it is Illinois, so…)

Back in the 1980s, Fairmount had a few circuits going, with horses going to and from the Chicago tracks, Ellis Park, Oaklawn and IIRC Tampa. Ironically there was a time when if a horse couldn't run at FP/Cahokia, it'd ship out to Waterford Park (now Mountaineer). During the winter, Fairmount offered the chance for some of the second tier harness horses from Chicago, and many of the Quad City Downs and fair horses a play to earn purse money.

Overall the racing wasn't bad at all. I knew plenty of guys making small profits (myself included) or only losing a little over the course of the year.

Then simulcasting started, then the lottery, then casinos and then ADWs. Not to mention the politicians, horsemen's assoc., real estate pressures, etc. It's been uphill ever since.

No easy answers.

I played Fairmount one time in my life a few years ago.

I liked a horse that had the top speed figure, figured to get loose easily, that was just claimed by a trainer that was terrific off the claim, and the horse had some even better back figures that the new trainer might get him back to.

After all that, you figure the horse is going to be 2/5 right?

The horse won by just under 10 lengths under complete wraps for most of the stretch and paid just over 3-1.

You would think after finding an overlay like that on my very first experience playing the track I would be salivating to play there again. But no, I'm still banging heads against computers at the majors.
