Mine too.

He wasn't especially good, but he was underrated at the time. Beyer had yet to realize that his new synthetic figures were coming up too low for top horses (like him, Zenyatta, and others). Many top horses were jumping up when put on dirt and getting a meaningful pace. Beyer eventually changed his process, but that was later.

POTN didn't run especially well in the Derby (though a 2nd is nothing to sneeze at) and then went bad in the Peakness. He never had the chance to prove himself. But it was nice he proved his quality as a stallion. Tough loss.

Pioneer of the Nile

RIP, one of the most exciting thoroughbreds I followed.

Hoping his grandsons( via American Pharoah) run lights out..

Yep, mine too. Never bought any of that synthetic track knock stuff.

I can still remember the excitement of Tom Durkin calling him in front in the Kentucky Derby.....

The only problem was Mine That Bird was well clear of him.

Seriously, though, this is a huge loss. He was some stallion.

Wow, didn't realize he fathered American Pharoah.

Sad loss regardless.
