Well they are cutting back the dose this years and 2 year olds will race without next year.

Where are the horses going, most are owned locally. Turf paradise.

Most horses don’t need to race on lasix.

What do they do when the horses bleed in Europe, Hong Kong and Dubai.

If a juicer like narvarro can run in Dubai without lasix, than anyone can.

The horses that absolutely need lasix will be retired. The ones that start to bleed will be retired. owners aren't going to continue to pay training bills on horses that are bleeders and can't win. It's really that simple.

In the long run, wouldn't that incentivize major breeding farms to produce thoroughbreds that aren't bleeders?

Or taken a step further --

Given the publicity surrounding the spike in fatal breakdowns at Santa Anita and elsewhere, wouldn't that incentivize major breeding farms to once again produce thoroughbreds that that are... ahem... durable? Capable of averaging ten starts per year instead of six? (Per stats at The Jockey Club website.)

Yes and yes.

But also, a dirty little secret: one of the reasons for the reduction in average starts has nothing to do with durability of horses- trainers do not like losing races because of published win percentages and don't want to run frequently or face bigger fields.

What about the bettors coming away from the windows with blood flowing out of their nostrils?

The favorite in the Fair Grounds Oaks bled through Lasix yesterday pretty badly.

that would be a total crap shoot for breeders and could take thirty to forty years or forever meaning never happens. they're not going to take that risk.

That would explain why SERENGETI EMPRESS was leading until the top of the stretch and then coasting to a stop before the finish.

Why did the horse need Lasix to compete?
