Tom Seaver retiring from public life

It appears that Tom Seaver is suffering from dementia and will no longer do any broadcasting or make public appearances. Horrible break for one of the best pitchers in the modern era.

That's a shame for him and his family.

I only hope he has many more days of happiness than sadness.

Loved watching Tom pitch. His form was unique and he mixed his pitches better than any pitcher I've ever seen. His lifetime ERA (2.86) is often overlooked. He also threw 67 shutouts and won 311 games vs. 200 losses. One of the few pure yet overpowering pitchers of baseball.
I wish Tom the best. What he's been diagnosed with is truly horrible. I watched my mother suffer.

Tom Seaver also had 231 complete games in his Hall of Fame career. The top modern day pitchers in this era may never even reach 15-20 total in their career!!

Saw him at Shea as an 11 year old boy and at Fenway Park in my middle 20s.

Horrible news, especially in this 50th anniversary year of the Mets shocking the world by winning the 1969 World Series.

I was fortunate enough to see his no-hitter. Very sad that he'll miss all the 50th anniversary celebrations.

Man... wishing him some enjoyment and comfort.

Before my time, know him as a hall of fame pitcher and a winner. For whatever reason, I never really studied him.

I think Seaver is credited as a leading example of the 'drop and drive' mechanics.

There's a baseball theory/technique called the 'drop and drive' where you deliver a little lower (maybe the other theory is 'tall and fall', I can't remember), deliver lower with the step toward home, and you really use your back leg and hips. I think Nolan Ryan may have had similar mechanics and I kind of gravitated towards that example.

My son pitched a couple years at Cal-Bakersfield 2007-2009 and his pitching coach believed in this. Yes, Seaver was the poster boy for drop and drive, and actually, Ryan is more associated with the "Tall and Fall". Funny, as it would seem if you remember one thing about Nolan Ryan amongst anything, it was the power that seemed to come from his lower body.
