the place nicknamed ‘The Thumb,” by the natives. And, because most of the horses there didn’t run over the winter, they ease them into racing slowly. The first couple of weeks are littered with 4 ½ furlong races so horses can race their way back into shape. As the days grow longer, they begin to stretch them out and ultimately; races will be run at longer distances. There is no turf course so all the races will be run on the dirt

Hopefully this is what your looking for?

From the air, the track looks like a hug thumb.
When they were building the track, the local paper had a plane take aeriel photos for a spread on the new grounds.

The "<" in the infield gives you a thumbnail on the right hand side.

Original, we are not around here!

There are a couple of other terms I have heard over the years....

It's because you only need four fingers to count the field size and four fingers to count how many furlongs they're running. Then you've got The Thumb left over to do whatever you want with.

Any thoughts on the apprentice Joshua Rodriguez that won a handful of races there this past meet? He moved on to Southern California.

Was he hooking up with any decent outfits? Was he ever surprising anyone with some better than expected finishes? Did he periodically get bet down and finish as expected? Did he have a few "moments" when the regulars on the rail or on the backstretch commented positively about his riding?

Was he just another bug?
