Most scrap thieves are meth addicts and do not care what they destroy, they will do 10's of thousands of dollars damage to get a $200 of copper, a legitimate scrap dealer will not accept items of suspicious origin. The local scrap yard here won't even take bronze and they have a big list of items they will not accept. That list shows you the crap the meth heads will take. Grave markers, man hole covers, guard rails, etc,etc. A man hole cover can weigh 150#, cast iron or junk steel goes for 5 cents a pound. So a crack head would risk killing someone for $7.50? All scrap yards have cameras, if the scumbags who did this tried to scrap that statue they will be caught.
The statue cost $75,000, 300 pounds of scrap bronze is worth probably $600, or so. Give them $600 credit toward $75,000 they owe.
