Stewards Minutes Gems: Stewards discussing Voodoo Dolls, Curses, with Norberto Arroyo

08-27-173 NORBERTO ARROYO MEETING Jockey Norberto Arroyo Jr. appeared in the Steward’s office regarding a disturbance in the jockey’s room earlier in the week. He was accompanied by his fiancé Elizabeth Del Rio, CHRB Investigator Jim Hamilton and Jockey Rafael Bejarano were also present. Jockey Arroyo stated that he got upset but not physical with another jockey because a family member of that jockey had been performing ceremonies involving ‘Voodoo Dolls’ with the purpose of performing “curses” on himself and other jockeys. Jockey Arroyo was told to not disrupt activities in the jockey’s room and continue to bring issues that are of concern to the Stewards.

I've cursed a lot of jockeys over the years, just didn't need any props, words did quite well.

There was an older woman at MP several years back who use to do the hand gesture curse as the horses came out of the paddock, you couldn't miss her she was always dressed in bright colors. I haven't seen her in a few years.

In some cultures "Voodoo" can be quite dangerous and scary especially when practiced by "one who knows".

Never mess with a man's fears or make fun of them. Wise man taught me this years ago.
