Sad to read this . Always made time to read his work .
One of his pieces written prior to Eight Belles run in the Derby , still
haunts me when I see his name . It was visionary to say the least .

this is sad to hear and i remember having a favorite paul moran article where he wrote about our p.a. friend john del riccio learning the art of figure making from the late and great henry kuck.

He really wanted the Breeders Cup to come back to NY . Here is a small
sampling of what he felt .
Belmont Park affords the luxury of two expansive turf courses and the world's only 12-
furlong dirt course. Europeans appreciate the configuration of the grass courses in New
York as compared to the typical, tight-turned American course and the main track at
Belmont accommodates races run at up to 9 furlongs around one turn, a configuration
that results in truly run contests of horses and riders. The sand and loam surface is kind
and fair. The place is regal, among the most historic venues on the continent and the
setting in autumn is without peer.
Apparently, the Breeders' Cup view of efficiency is simultaneously making
as many ill advised and unpopular decisions as possible.
Meanwhile, the Breeders' Cup has been run in California against billows of smoke from
brushfires, eerie purple skies and 100-degree heat with ash whipped by a searing wind.
Santa Anita has not been home to a suitable racing surface, perhaps ever. Conditions for
Breeders' Cup executives and corporate sponsors who wish to play golf are superior to
New York in November and the beaches are inviting but this is about horse racing, not
vacation.

Heartfelt condolences go out to the Moran family. What a phenomenal writer and superb human being. Several years ago, I wrote to him to tell him how much I enjoyed reading what he writes and this man was so gracious to take the time to write a very nice note back to me in return.

I always enjoyed reading Paul Moran. His passion for horseracing was obvious. And I usually found myself agreeing with whatever points Paul was making in his writing.
I felt fortunate to have a guy like him covering the sport I love. 
RIP, Paul.

Just heard the news....he loved the Spa and had a way that cut thru the usual media phonyness. He was a smart guy.... and desvered his earned respect. Condolences to all who shared time with him.

For those of you who never lived in New York, Paul was part of the Newsday sport section years ago. Newsday started as a Long Island paper and eventually was published in all five boroughs. At one time Newsday's horse racing coverage was excellent. John Pricci did the analysis for NYRA each day. Moran was a columnist and reporter. Moran was one of the best turf writers of all time.
