need help finding a free simple spreadsheet.

Open Office is FREE and very good.
MAybe a Google Doc?

With Open Office, the spreadsheet has enough columns to open a BRIS data file.

Might want to try LibreOffice. It's a fork of OpenOffice (originally StarOffice).

Most of the OpenOffice developers went to LibreOffice after Oracle acquired OpenOffice and ran it into the ground. Consequently, LibreOffice is much more actively developed.

Another fork for Macs from StarOffice/OpenOffice is NeoOffice. Again, NeoOffice is not as actively developed as LibreOffice.

Actually, now that I look at it, it is Libre that I have.
