No deal between Suffolk, horsemen
Talks between the owners of Suffolk Downs the organization of horse owners and trainers over a deal that would allow thoroughbred racing to continue at the storied East Boston track have broken down. The breakdown, revealed Thursday by the lawyer of the horse owners and trainers after months of negotiations with the track owners, probably means there will be no live racing in 2015.
At a Gaming Commission meeting on Thursday, Frank Frisoli, the lawyer for the horse owners and trainers, said the negotiations came to an abrupt end recently when Suffolk Downs management made a move by asking the Legislature to allow it to simulcast horse racing there without conducting live racing.

Once again, an entity stands on ceremony only to stab itself in the eye with a fountain pen.
Brilliant...
Ok guys, let the place go dark for good.
Where ya gonna race now?

If you care about the overall health of the sport nationwide, the answer is a resounding NO.

With high takeout, on a dinky 5/8 track, in a dumpy city, no turf, and a "grandstand" with all the ambiance of a quonset hut. Yay us!

they plan on extending the shoot to make it a 3/4 mile track.
don't sell these people to short, they have some good plans if they get a favorable deal from the state house.

Good plans for whom? I guessing it won't involve the bettors.

a matter of fact they have some good plans that should attract bettors that bet those type of races.
they will be paying big purses and the place will not profit from the casino money at all. if they are going to do well they will have to create a handle. if they run a meet and don't make any attempts to get bettors to play the place they will lose a few million to just get the place ready to run.

I recall when Brockton first resurfaced in the news around October one of the Carney clan (the track owners) said he would like to see races that are either restricted to local horses or written with conditions that exclude shippers from outside jurisdictions (specifically NY).
This mentality will build a solid betting product?

My heart REALLY hopes they race at Brockton, but my head says something will eventually get worked out to race at Suffolk, even for a reduced number of dates. The horsemen view Brockton as the step child that no one wants, and they are going to exhaust every possible avenue to avoid having to race there.
I'm sure that a major reason for not liking Brockton is the tight turns. Adding a chute to allow for 6f races will not change that.
I also saw an article (one of those racing headlines that pop up on the PaceAdvantage website) that hinted that the Boston Globe article was not correct, or at least premature.
Hoping I'm wrong, lamboguy!

I don't you find too many bettors who think paying big purses is doing something for them. First Question What will be the takeout? That is something interest today's bettors.
