Does anybody know a source for reliable stats on the number of 2 year old starters and races pre-1988?
The Jockey Club has the info for 1988 and later, but I'm having trouble finding earlier figures. Short of grinding through the Record of Horses in old ARMS {shudder} to add up starters, anybody have a better idea?
Below are two years I do have, 1905 and 2005. The # of foals is that of '03 (the 2yo's of '05).

1905: 03440 01728 50.23%
2005: 37063 11197 30.21%
23.42% of races in 1905 vs 7.59% in 2005 permited 2yos.
27.73% of starters in 1905 vs. 15.14% in 2005 were 2yos.
