I am a big supporter of Pruitt and what he is trying to do at the EPA, so am especially disappointed in what I see as his ethical lapses. Those are stupid, unforced errors. He appears to hold himself above the fray and that some rules do not apply to him. That said, and as Trump himself said, Pruitt is doing a terrific job dismantling the EPA, and so I think he'll get an opportunity to make restitution and hold onto his job.

What is the right wing's major complaint about EPA? It seems to be on the hit list of all Republicans.

My complaint is that the EPA exists in any form more than an advisory role for the states, where I believe control over environmental issues should be regulated. I would reduce its size by 95%.

You're almost right. States are where environmental regulations should be implemented. But the setting of standards should be national. You can't have one state putting waste in the water or air to the detriment of other states.

There's a reason why a Republican president signed a bill creating the EPA. Since the agency was created we haven't had to deal with the Cuyahoga River catching fire or the dead zone of water known as Lake Erie.

EPA has not always been even handed. They aren't perfect. Sometimes they have been downright stupid. But it is more important to have a central agency to develop environmental standards than relying on states to come up with 50 separate rules. Ask automakers if they'd rather comply with one federal standard or 50 separate state standards. Since the passage of the first Clean Air Act in the 70's, cars have literally become 99% cleaner. They get better mileage and still perform well.

I can't understand why Trump wants to shitcan the two most important cabinet departments - EPA and State. Get rid of the Dept or Education if you need to reduce government. Teaching kids should be the prerogative of the states.

No, I'm right because I agree that the Feds create minimum standards and the states regulate themselves with assistance from the Feds. I don't like one size fits all solutions. It makes for poor outcomes. If one state wants to have cadillac environmental protection, they can go for it, but don't force the next state over to do the same. I also would like to see govt get out of the research grant business. It seems to have become political, and science should never be political or religious in tone and substance.

I would say it amazes that someone so explicitly enamored with the perks of power lasted this far into an administration purportedly dedicated to “draining the swamp” if it weren’t so obvious that phrase is nothing but a marketing tool.

On policy, this exit will make no difference. But it’s nice to see there is some degree of waste that gets enough attention that even a man with the low ethical standards of Donald Trump suggests you need to exit.

He was an emabarrasment to the administration more than a year ago. I guess very, very, very, very late is better than never.
