Jockeys lead a hard life that most of us will never understand. My heart goes out to his family.

Any of them forced to keep a low unnatural weight has to be rough. To me that would be 24-7 hell. I played sports in high school and college and was around wrestlers, walking around spitting, jogging in rubber suits, wearing rubber suits in a steam room, etc, etc. We actually had a guy die on the football team in high school, because he was on diet pills and water pills, trying to get down to like 220 for wrestling season. Extreme dieting makes a person weak, no thanks.

I remember him riding at AP and PRM. Sad.
Wasn't his brother or relative Patrick Canchari badly injured a few years ago too? I think he was a jockey and it was either an auto or racetrack accident.

Yes - it was his brother in an auto accident in Arizona. Their sister, Ashley, has been managing his care since he was moved back home to Minnesota. He has made some decent progress, but there are still many, many issues resulting from his TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury).

Brutal.
On the surface I understand how top athletes succeed by making sacrifices and having dedication...but depriving oneself of biological basics like water and food sounds like inevitable disaster.
Then you have the jocks like P Val and Desormeaux who screw up constantly and do stuff that's easy to criticize, but I've heard addiction described as "suicide by inches".
