Petition

To: Pace Advantage Administrators: Are you aware of the petition circulating that is requesting Santa Anita bring back the Place Pick All and Rolling Doubles? These were taken away as the new low take out was added.

It's here.

Not sure who the person is who started it, but it has quite a few signatures so far. Most bettors seem to want rolling doubles at the lower takeout, not just a couple a day.

I have to admit, I'm surprised people still bet Santa Anita. Small fields, disrespect to the player for years. Why do people still play there?

That's a good question. Other than folks not wanting to start over and learning the in's and out's of a new track I find myself playing fewer races as you mentioned. One of the things I like is you tend to have less off track conditions in SoCal than other regions but since the fields are becoming smaller I have to be more picky about which races and conditions to play. I personally have been slowly gravitating to eastern and southern tracks over the years. Hoping rolling double still stay on.

People play at tracks for different reasons...familiarity, proximity, etc. For some people, playing horses is still a form of recreation. Horse racing needs every bettor from the Grandparent betting their grandkids birthdays, to the players that like to play their favorite color or name, to the serious handicapper, to the whales. The weather is an obvious reason as well.

The rolling doubles can not "stay on". They are gone. The petition is trying to influence Santa Anita to bring them back!

i want to start signing campaign for more daily doubles, they gave the discount but took 3 of them away every day. that's pretty cute, they give you the break to get you interested and then force you into other bets.

what about the daily doubles?

3 years ago Hastings gave a takeout reduction in the show pools, they gave it every race, they didn't pick and choose. i have stuck with Hasting in the 3rd slot because they stayed with the program.

Looking at the DD handle last year on January 10th at SA you can see why they elimated most of the DDs. The DD on races 1 and 2 had $33,000 bet and the DD on the last 2 races had $68,000 bet. The rest of the DDs averaged about $20,000.

Rolling DDs are great, it lets you see how the next race is being bet, that can help with pick 3's, etc.

Even if you go back 5 years the double pools represent the smallest amounts wagered at Santa Anita. Bettors put their money into the exacta, tri, super, pick 4 etc. It is not a popular wager.
Personally, I like the double but it a chalk fest at Santa Anita and other large tracks and I gravtate to smaller and medium tracks for this wager. If you are a decent handicapper, it helps the bottom line if you are selective on the double races.

Hastings' takeout is 15% for WPS, Doubles, Pick-3,4,5s

By the looks of the DD pools since putting in the 18% rate it doesn't appear that it is luring in many bettors.
