The worst way imaginable to lose a bet on a horse race
If somebody has posted this before, please delete it. Otherwise, I would never ride this horse if I was a jockey.

I like Announcer Pete and I hope he wouldn't take this personally, but a pet peeve of mine is announcers' calling the winner too early; sometimes with a 16th still to go. This is an extreme example, and he covered himself well, because apparently the young filly has a history, but the point is: You never know. It ain't over til it's over.

I wonder if the exercise rider has had any issues with her in the stretch. Seems like she could be "trained" out of this behavior.

I didn't see any shadows except the big one she passed before the "big leap". Nor did I see a shadow roll, just a nose strip. I think a shadow roll is in order. I've seen horses try to jump the dirt strip coming off the turf course at SA before but not something like this near the wire.

One time i was at Fairplex and i listened to Trevor saying if you bet your money on ____, head to the windows and be first in line. So i did , then i heard a gasp, turned around and saw my horse in the infield. I don't think he makes that call anymore.

Almost the exact same thing happened at Bel in the spring meet. I've actually had a jockey just fall off leading by 6 with 100 yards to go. No bad step, or hit the rail. He just fell off.

It's a rough way to intentionally lose.

Picturing the unpredictable descent of a fallen leaf, I'd say they pretty much nailed the naming of this horse

I had the would-be exacta. I remember the same thing happening about 20 years ago. If you play long enough, you'll be amazed at the ways to lose a bet.

I've tried to remember what race it was, think it was the AZ Juvenile Fillies, maybe the Oaks, probably early turn of the 21st century. There was one in there that looked like an absolute cinch of the meet. And it was bookended by some races that made for perfect doubles and pick threes. Don't even know if pick fours were offered when the race ran, but needless to say if they were I'm sure that I was in there. Even though this one was a really short price, it was just the perfect sequence to go in hot and heavy in multi-race bets and some other exotics hoping to get the old Goren 2-1 on a legit 3-5 shot.
It was just a slam dunk all the way around the track. I'm almost positive it was Michael Baze (RIP) aboard and is clear by damn near a pole mid-stretch. But the horse was just refusing to switch to the right lead. I remember sitting there yelling with crazy John to just let the sucker coast in and stop worrying about it. But nope. He had to keep trying for the lead change, flopped around, cracked the whip I think, and bingo bango, off he came. I wasn't terribly pleased. People say snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in any number of scenarios, but this was the literal example of it.
