This is the kind of thing that leads conspiratorial minded people to speculate about photos.

It really does. "Posting the photo", which racing has done for over 80 years (it used to be they physically posted hard copies of the photo throughout the grandstand) is a crucial transparency issue. We've all seen races where we thought watching live or on TV that the horse won and they put up the . And if something went wrong with the photo, the explanation should be full and meticulous, not cursory. This is a BFD.

AGAIN, the MIRROR is the finish line NOT the winning post..
AGAIN, the MIRROR is the finish line NOT the winning post..
AGAIN, the MIRROR is the finish line NOT the winning post..

At Woodbine, for example, the mirror is almost 6 FULL INCHES PAST THE OUTSIDE margin of the winning post

Sometimes the judges ask for a specific enlargement of the photo sent out to the crowd to insure it is clear to all, what the finish was. I often would blow up the photo very large so show how close it was, but that enlargement OFTEN was changed to a samller one.

Interesting choice of words..."shenanigans"

As if they did this on purpose.

As if they HAD a photo available but chose not to use it...and instead tried something else to perhaps alter the actual outcome.

Do people seriously believe that is what happened here?

Reading the replies to Grening's tweet is nothing but standard Internet shenanigans.

I agree wholeheartedly as sometimes there are troubles even with the back up camera.

Once again, your reply has nothing to do with what is actually happening here.

But thanks for injecting yourself just to hear the sound of your own keys clacking and providing us with yet another reason why you are so important and knowledgeable.

In over 10 years NOT ONCE, NOT EVER, did the judges interfere with the truthful results of a photo.

I disagreed a few times, and each time, the judges showed me where I WAS INCORRECT.

Screwing up on the photo is not shenanigans. But everything else about this episode certainly qualifies as shenanigans. There's a way to deal with this situation, and it isn't the way NYRA did it..

The vast majority of people DO NOT KNOW WHERE THE 'line" is nor how the phot system works.

The scan rate could have been wrong, he lights turned on too late (they are brighter righ after the switch is thrown than later), there can be intervening factors like on tongue is ahead of another and the crowd thinks that is reason to disbelive the photo, one horse coming OUT of a stride makes it look that the chest is closer to the line than the other horse extedning into stride..

LOTS of reasons a photo is not that representative of the outcome
